Scooter Asbo kids Caught on Facebook
THREE members of a teenaged scooter gang who posted footage of their exploits on Facebook and Myspace were banned from sitting on a moped for two years by a youth court on Monday.
The trio – part of a nine-strong gang whose moped antics the police say terrorised residents in Maiden Lane and Agar Grove – were handed Asbos at Thames Youth Court.
The gang, which called itself Maidenblockz, was caught when detectives viewed footage on the internet of members as young as 13 tearing through the streets of Camden Town and around the North Circular road on stolen scooters.
Gang members had filmed themselves on mobile phones.
Various members of the group were convicted earlier this year of 30 charges including aggravated taking and driving away – the police term for vehicle theft.
Camden police Sgt Craig McGill pursued the case after viewing MySpace and Facebook. He said: “This was an unusual case in that so much material had been posted on the internet – this came from gangs boasting on MySpace type sites about their criminal activity. They identified themselves by their postcode. Crime committed on cycles and scooters is an ongoing issue in Camden, but this is a victory for the residents of Maiden Lane and Agar Grove estates whose lives were being blighted by the selfish driving and anti-social behaviour of these youths.” |
