Record-breaking pupils make their mark with best ever GCSE results
Exams delight for ‘truly impressive’ youngsters and their schools as grades go up once again
GCSE results have hit record highs in Camden for the fourth year in a row.
Pupils across the borough achieved their best ever marks, with 51 per cent achieving five or more A* to C grades including English and mathematics – a 5 per cent increase on last year’s results.
All nine Camden secondary schools improved or maintained their 2008 results.
The percentage of pupils gaining five or more GCSEs at A* to C also increased to 64 per cent, although the increase of 1 per cent was a far smaller rise than Camden’s 2008 scores, when the five-plus A* to C results improved by 7 per cent.
Councillor Andrew Mennear, the borough’s education chief, hailed the grade rises as “truly impressive” and praised the hard work of students and teachers staff.
He added: “A 5 per cent increase for A* to C including English and mathematics is truly impressive and I would like to congratulate all our young people on these fantastic results.
“Our teaching staff also deserve praise for their hard work.”
The school with the most improved results was Hampstead School in West Hampstead, where the number of pupils awarded five or more A* to C grades including English and maths rose by 12 per cent. Acland Burghley with 9 per cent, Parliament Hill with 7 per cent, Maria Fidelis with 6 per cent, and Camden School for Girls with 5 per cent also reported rises in the same area.
Hampstead headteacher Jacques Szemalikowski said: “It shows how much can be achieved when the school community works together with determination and belief.”
Haverstock headteacher John Dowd said: “Over 60 per cent of students got an A* to C grade in English, science, media studies, and technology. I think it’s a real focus we’ve got on improving education in every classroom.”
Comparisons with other London local authorities are expected to be calculated and published next month. Early indications showed that 67 per cent of all exams taken were graded A* to C – an increase of 4 per cent on last year.
