Joe Daly |
Friends’ tributes to Joe Daly, big hearted ‘Clown Number One’
OFFICIALLY, he was Humphrey J Daly.
But he dropped his first name decades ago when he arrived in London from Cork. And from then on he was known to one and all in Kentish Town simply as Joe.
Joe Daly’s sudden death at the age of 63 came as a shock to his family, neighbours and multitude of friends.
The devoted cat lover – and father of two adult sons – was a jack of all trades in the building business and a general handyman.
He lived in Dunollie Road and was divorced.
Among his close pals at his regular watering hole, O’Reillys in Kentish Town Road, he happily joined in with comic capers and earned the title of “Clown Number One” by popular vote.
Easily identified by his trademark flat cap topping his wiry 6ft 3ins frame, Joe was the
first to admit he could be stubborn and contrary. “But he was always game for a laugh
and would always want to help someone in need,” said a long-time friend.
He added: “Joe loved this neighbourhood and had a feeling of community spirit. Everyone who had contact with him will miss him.”
His life will be celebrated in “big top” style at his cremation on Thursday (September 10) in East Finchley.
