Cup dreams are over
Gallant Kentish Town swept from glory trail as last-gasp penalty claim denied
KENTISH Town were denied a last-gasp penalty on Saturday as their FA Cup dreams were shattered by Burnham at the Gore Stadium.
Trailing their hosts 2-1 in injury time, the travelling Townies swept forward in search of a vital equaliser and the chance to earn a replay at their Barnet Copthall home ground.
Midfielder Fabion Simms was just about to smash the ball home from five yards when he was fouled, but the referee somehow failed to see the mistimed tackle and allowed play to continue.
Fielding a youthful looking side, Kentish Town fell behind after only five minutes when Adrian Sears played a clever one-two with Dean Papali before beating the keeper.
Before the Townies could catch their breath they found themselves further behind when Papali rounded off a sweeping counter-attack to make it 2-0 to the Buckinghamshire-based side.
The visitors rallied and started to haul themselves back into the match. Midway through the first-half Chinua Phinn-Archer showed great strength and determination to get on the end of Ossie Barkat’s corner, only to smash his shot against the post.
It could have easily been a penalty as Phinn-Archer was hauled down by one of the Burnham defenders just before taking his shot.
Town’s pressure finally paid off just before the break when another Barkat corner allowed debutant Mariusz Serwin to head home from close range.
Town continued to push for an equaliser in the second-half with Simms, Serwin and Luke Kavanagh all nearly finding the vital leveller.
Any chances that Town had of taking something from the game were dealt a massive blow on 75 minutes when goalkeeper Netanel Elraz miskicked a simple clearance.
The ball fell kindly for Papali, but in a desperate attempt to correct his initial error Elraz ended up bringing the Burnham forward down, earning himself a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
After the game new Town manager Rakatahr Hudson said: “We started like a rabbit caught in headlights. However, the group didn’t let it affect them as we built on our performance and competed really well all over the pitch.
“I don’t want to talk about refereeing decisions,” he added.
“We will take belief from the game and look to turn this performance into positive results over the coming games.” |
