Help in promoting world peace with this garden
• HAVING read your article (Conflict over new ‘peace garden’ near train station, September 3), I would like to express my strong support for this imaginative and praiseworthy undertaking.
Previously derelict and rubbish-strew land has been cleaned up by local volunteers of which I am one.
This community involvement will continue as the project proceeds, thereby providing an avenue of action for those who wish to promote peace but fear there is nothing they can do.
Hampstead is enriched by this new focus of interest for
visitors and locals alike and residents can take pride in its contribution to what is arguably the most urgent international goal today – world peace.
Furthermore, this garden will join a worldwide chain of such sites.
This non-political undertaking is a commitment to ending conflicts such as that in Afghanistan and putting an end to the tragic loss of young British lives.
I conclude by praising Jonathan Bergman who has had the vision, determination and perseverance to instigate this project. While I welcome community discussion of plans for developing the peace garden, I am horrified by the gratuitous personal accusations quoted in your article.
TERRY SAYERS
