Old King Cole fires Phoenix into top spot
Camden Sunday League
VETERAN striker Scott Cole returned to fire Phoenix to the top of the Division One table at the weekend with a deadly double strike against Field Crusaders.
Phoenix took the lead midway through the first half when Paul “Gazza” Butler played a one-two with Anthony Clark before blasting his shot past the keeper from all of 25 yards.
Man-of-the-match Cole then stole centre stage as he made a rare appearance at Hackney Marshes to form a lethal strike partnership with his son James.
The 38-year-old showed great timing and agility to nod home Clark’s cross with an acrobatic diving header on the stroke of half time.
Father and son then combined as James raced to the byline before pulling the ball back for Scott to tap home his second of the game. High-flying Phoenix continued to push forward and scored again when Michael Patrick set up Clark for his fifth goal in just three league outings.
Field Crusaders showed tremendous spirit as they pulled two goals back late on, but the damage had already been done as Phoenix ran out 4-2 winners.
The only other top flight fixture saw champions Reddot net a hard-fought victory over Archway Allstars.
Despite only having the bare minimum 11 players, the Dots took the lead when Steven Bruce poked the ball home from close range after Paul Reid’s initial shot had been saved.
Archway scored a deserved equaliser, but Reddot stepped their game up a gear and edged back in front when Emanuel Hanson scored with a cheeky back-heel.
With the colossal figure of John Yates getting up off his sick bed to add some much-needed experience in midfield, Reddot were given a little more freedom to push forward.
It was man-of-the-match Reid who benefited the most as he scored late on to add the finishing touches to a 3-1 victory.
The Division Two highlights saw Constitution storm to a 7-1 victory over Kings Hell Cats, while the Mayville ‘A’ team beat Surreal Madrid 5-3.
In Division Three the Mayville ‘B’ team scored the biggest win of the weekend with a 13-0 rout over Park City Rovers. There were also big wins for FC Bertoli and Boundary Estate. |
