Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 1 October 2009

Staff at the museum deserve better conditions

• FOLLOWING your article (British Museum to seek ‘vital’ £135m revamp, September 24) about the proposed new extension to the museum I took the opportunity to go to the exhibition you advertised about the scheme.
I must admit that although I have visited the British Museum on a number of occasions over the last few years I was slightly shocked to see how cramped the conditions are for the staff on site.
The photographs of the area where the people doing conservation work was really sad to see and completely at odds with the first-class feeling within the museum itself. The new facilities looked marvellous and clearly will be of benefit to visitors but I think it is the staff who really deserve the building.
I do hope that the Camden Council give permission for this new extension so that the museum can continue to hold such wonderful exhibitions as we have seen in recent years and the staff can have conditions that reflect their professional skill.
