‘Hampstead Village is dying’

Campaigners call for action to stop High Street turning into a decaying rat run

HAMPSTEAD Village is dying, according to a group of concerned residents who have created a vision of the future as it might be if urgent action is not taken to protect the High Street.
And they are offering the public a chance to see their proposals, and add their own, at two events – the first at the Everyman Cinema on October 11, and the second at Burgh House on November 5.
“At the moment the High Street is dying, with shops closing because Hampstead has become a place you drive through, rather than come to,” says film director Farokh Khorooshi, who leads Hampstead 2020.
“Hampstead cannot thrive as a business and living community if it remains like that.
“The Village has become polluted by the enormous volume of traffic. Parking is impossible and Fitzjohn’s Avenue has become a racetrack for those who want to avoid the Finchley Road cameras.
“What we’re really saying is: What will Hampstead look like in the year 2020? We have our vision for the future about what can be done. If you want to worry about it, then now is the time [to act].”
Mr Khorooshi, 54, the chairman of RedFrog – the Redington and Frognal Residents Association – has already shown the group’s concept to Camden councillors, members of the Heath and Hampstead Society and the Highgate Society.
He added. “I expected a lot of criticism and negativity – and I haven’t had any. I’m overwhelmed by the reaction.
“Now we want others to have the opportunity to see what we have to offer.
“I want people to pick up the gauntlet and come and tell us what they think can be done.”
One major aspect of the project is to clear the Village, especially the area around the Tube station, of the mass of ugly street furniture.

• The October 11 event is at 11am. Those wishing to attend should email hampstead2020@googlemail.com
