Pupils rescue toddlers club
CASH won by pupils at Parliament Hill School in a national competition has helped safeguard the future of a popular parents and toddlers drop-in club on Hampstead Heath.
For generations the 10 O’clock Club has provided a haven for young families. But for the past six months it has had the threat of closure hanging over it after funding from the Pre-School Learning Alliance was withdrawn.
But today (Thursday) the control of the popular morning sessions is due to be handed over to the Queen’s Crescent Community Centre – safeguarding the facility for the future – and it is partly thanks to the generosity of pupils at the nearby all-girls secondary school. They scooped a £3,000 prize in a national charity competition and handed over the cash to the club.
Hampstead and Highgate’s Labour MP Glenda Jackson will officially re-open the service today at the Peggy Jay Centre, named after the Hampstead Labour party stalwart and campaigner who started the club in the 1960s.
Ms Jay’s daughter, Catherine Boyd, who chairs the parents group at the centre, said: “We are delighted that the morning session can continue after months of threat and that my mother’s inspiration more than 40 years ago can continue to bring enjoyment to more than 300 parents and children a week.”
Queen’s Crescent Community Association chairman Mick Farrant said: “We felt that the club was far too good to lose and thus have worked hard with the support of the parents and organisations to make sure it continued.” |
