Boxers weigh in with a great gold medal haul in Denmark

TOP prizefighters from St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club proved they really can pack a punch at the weekend when they dominated the Haslev Box Cup, held in Denmark.
Captained by Alan Higgins, the Saints’ squad of 12 boxers returned home to their gym in Talacre Road, Kentish Town, with seven gold medals and three silvers.
Higgins, 21, led the way as he boxed twice on his way to capturing gold in the middleweight division for the second year running. There was further good news for the Kentish Town fighter, who is now ranked third in England, when he was selected to represent London in an upcoming bout against the Army.
Team-mate Kian Thomas celebrated his 18th birthday in style when he won gold in the light-welterweight category, while debutants James Feeney, 17, and Ossie Osagboro, 28, were also crowned kings of the ring at their respective weights.
Proving that St Pancras really do own the golden gloves, Ricky Redhead, 13, Charlie Worley, 14, and senior fighter Ady Nkalonatia, 21, also all punched their way to the top in their contests.
The Saints could so easily have been toasting 10 golds, with middleweight Pierre Moncrieffe, 30, lightweight Daniel Troy, 17, and lightweight Tony Preston, 16, all collecting silver after narrowly being outpointed.
Despite missing out on medals, Cy Porteous, 28, and John Casey, 12, put in creditable performances as St Pancras continue to build towards a bright future.
Head coach Roy Callaghan said afterwards: “Alan Higgins fought exceptionally well. He has already been selected to represent London and he’s knocking on England’s door too. All the boys boxed out of their skins, and everyone involved in the club is now looking forward to a rewarding season.”

• ST PANCRAS hold their annual dinner show at the Irish Centre in Murray Street, Camden Town, on November 11. Tickets cost £50 & include a three-course meal. Call Roy on 07931 441 035 for details.
