Bless all creatures - but not the really big ones
ONE saint was in for a fitting tribute last weekend at the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians in Kentish Town.
Neighbours queued for their pets to receive a blessing from parish priest the Reverend Tom Forde on Sunday afternoon, the feast day of St Francis, patron saint of animals.
The Roman Catholic church, in Lady Margaret Road, encouraged owners of dogs and cats through to tortoises and birds to bring their pets along for the Lord’s blessing.
But Reverend Forde must have breathed a heavy sigh of relief after finding parishioners had followed the church’s advice about horses, elephants and whales, which the church deemed “too large to fit in”.
Animals were so dear to Francis that he is said that to have thanked his donkey for its lifelong service on his deathbed in 1226. As for St Francis’s other specialities, the environment and Italy, well, there’s always next year. |
