Staff in shock after raid on café

AN armed robber walked into a Bloomsbury café and demanded cash at gunpoint on Saturday.
The Marchmont Street branch of Costa Coffee was being closed up for the evening by a female staff member when the gunman walked in and “calmly produced a gun and asked her to open the till”, according to store franchisee Haider Zaman.
Mr Zaman said the café’s CCTV captured the robbery and was in the hands of police, adding: “We are very surprised and very shocked – I have simply never heard of a Costa coffee shop being robbed in this way, and we are very concerned that such a person should be at large. The staff involved were very traumatised.”
Ricci De Freitas, chairman of the Marchmont Street Community Association, said: “This was the first armed robbery in the street.”
A Met police spokeswoman said: “The male suspect entered the premises and went to the counter where he produced a handgun from his waistband and demanded cash from a member of staff. He left the premises with a quantity of cash, walking along Marchmont Street in the direction of Russell Square Tube station. The suspect is described as white, aged in his 30s, with dark hair and a goatee beard, wearing a blue horizontal striped jumper.”
Witnesses are asked to contact police on 020 8358 1751.
