New girl Jenny makes her mark
League Cup
Millwall 0, Arsenal 2
JENNIFER Beattie celebrated her first start for Arsenal Ladies with a goal on Sunday in a hard-fought victory over Millwall.
The defender headed home a Rachel Yankey corner after only 10 minutes to give the Gunners the lead at Beckenham Town FC.
In a topsy-turvy match, the visitors had to wait until the final five minutes before finally making the game safe when Jayne Ludlow netted her second of the season thanks to another inch-perfect cross from Yankey.
The 2-0 win completed a perfect week for Arsenal Ladies and for midfielder Yankey.
The former Hampstead schoolgirl scored twice on Wednesday to help the north Londoners book a place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a resounding 9-0 win over Greek side POAK in Thessaloniki.
Four goals from Scotland midfielder Kim Little, two from Helen Lander and a strike from Ludlow completed the demolition job to make the second leg a formality.
Greater London League
Division Two North
Clapham Utd 2, Katabella 4
THE Kats continued their best start to the season in more than three years on Sunday when they clawed their way to a fourth win in five games against Clapham United.
In a scrappy first half Katabella took the lead when Tamar Koch caught the goalkeeper out of position with an instinctive finish.
Helen Frazer doubled the advantage after playing a clever
one-two with Lindsey Hall, before Jen Coupland scored what proved a crucial third goal after making the most of captain Amy Lamont’s tantalising through-ball.
Clapham rallied and pulled two quick goals back to leave the game hanging on a knife edge, but substitute Gemma Olds came off the bench to settle matters as Katabella ran out 4-2 winners. |
