Old Gunner knows where real action is
BEATING Blackburn is not what it used to be. But beating Liverpool is always fun.
So, two teams destined to live on past glories of actually managing to win the title were ultimately humiliated in London on Sunday.
Blackburn were shocking in defence and beating them does not constitute a Premiership challenge, especially if you let them score twice and give away a penalty.
There was only one match worth watching at the weekend, as les Gonneurs’ greatest player of the last 10 years fully understood. Given the choice between participating in the cringe-worthy nostalgia-fest going on in Holloway or watching two Premiership contenders, Patrick Vieira plumped for Stamford Bridge.
Vieira soon realised that Liverpool’s title challenge looks as dodgy as Rafa Benitez’s facial hair.
The much-hyped showdown between Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba was just that, hype.
Only Drogba regularly turns up at the big games, and when he does the effect it has on Rafa is worth the price of the ticket alone.
Let’s not begrudge The Crows’ Richard Osley his euphoria at another Holloway globe-trotter performance against lesser teams.
However to win the Premiership it takes more than the occasional thrashing of mid-table strugglers; it takes a hint of Vieira-type steel when the exhibition football isn’t working.
Until Arsene Wenger replaces Vieira Arsenal will be forced to exist on a diet of reminiscing and fourth (or fifth) place finishes.
What’s that? Vieira may be joining Chelsea as cover during the African Cup of Nations?
Oh just stop it! My grinning face is starting to hurt.
