The three poetry musketeers
• ONE small point to add to Dan Carrier’s informative piece about Judith Chernaik, Gerard Benson and Cicely Herbert, the three musketeers who select Poems on the Underground (Review, October 8): Gerard no longer lives in Carlingford Road in Hampstead but has moved to Bradford where he is the esteemed poet laureate.
Dan Carrier quotes Judith Chernaik as saying: “We have found people love the early ones – medieval, Elizabethan – but we find the language is still immediate and resonates.” This goes a long way to explaining their truly amazing success all over the world since poems first started appearing on the London Underground.
I love the poems by Anon, and the riddles. They are second to nobody’s.
