Mark, Fred, Louise and Christine Eggelton, who all work at the Royal Free Hospital |
Family operation! Why the Eggeltons love Royal Free
FOR most people, bringing the office home at the end of the day is something best avoided. But one Hampstead worker loves her job so much she has taken her home life to work.
Ward administrator Christine Eggelton, 51, who joined the Royal Free Hospital in Pond Street 27 years ago, felt so at home on the ward she found jobs for her son, daughter and father-in-law. “I first started working here in 1982, before I had children,” she said. “During that time, my father-in-law retired and wanted to carry on working, but not full-time. Then I saw an ad in the Friends’ shop – they were looking for a store manager.”
That was 20 years ago, and Fred, now a sprightly 85, is a popular figure around the hospital. Since losing his wife, the job has given him a new lease of life. “Without this place, I’d go home and die,” he said. “I can’t sit inside and keep talking to the cat. The Royal Free is like home.”
Christine’s son Mark and daughter Louise joined the staff last year.
Seventeen-year-old Mark enjoyed his work experience so much he is now a permanent feature in the hospital’s out-patient clinics, while Louise, 20, is an administration assistant in dermatology. “We all muck in, we help each other out,” said Christine. “At the end of the day, you’re working for patients.” |
