Salsa dancers who have been told their classes have lost funding |
Strictly no dancing! Salsa classes hit by funding axe
DANCING salsa mums got a nasty shock when they arrived at the Calthorpe Project in King’s Cross last Monday.
A letter was fixed to the door warning that funding for their weekly class and free crèche in Gray’s Inn Road had ended after seven years.
“It’s my life,” said Wendy Marie, 41. “I travel all the way over here from West Hampstead to King’s Cross every Monday just for the class. It’s so much fun and a great way of letting off steam. There are all kinds of people from all different backgrounds here. The kids come and join in too – it’s good to know they’re just next door.”
Columbian dance teacher Tatiana Mosquera, who is an expert in cha-cha-cha, salsa and mambo, said: “It is not just about the dancing. The sessions are really good for your health too.”
The project has been funded by a number of sponsors including the Big Lottery, NHS Camden and most recently Sport Relief. A Sport Relief spokesman said the salsa session funding was only ever available for one year.
Calthorpe Project co-ordinator Louise Gates said: “A lot of the mums are really upset because it has got so popular. It costs about £3,000 a year but it is really hard to find sponsors in the current climate.”
