Acting their ages... Playwright pensioners’ productions look back 50 years
ELDERLY playwrights showcased their talents in front of the Mayor of Camden at Hampstead Theatre on Thursday.
The “Young at Art” writing class had six scripts performed by professional actors in the annual performance, attended by Camden’s Mayor Faruque Ansari.
The plays focused on a wide range of topics from 50 years ago – including a social housing crusade, dementia and a comedy set in a VD clinic.
The Mayor described Young at Art as a “very interesting idea” and Somers Town Cllr Roger Robinson praised the “beautiful plays of experience”.
Playwright Barry Cummins, who starred in his own play Making a Stand, said the class had been a “very enjoyable experience”.
The plays were directed by Eric Dupin and tuition was by Doris Daly.
Ms Daly said: “The course is about bringing art and theatre to the elderly in Camden, encouraging them to get out of the house and reach their full potential.”
The group, for the over-60s, is funded by Westminster Kingsway College.
