Massacre on the Marshes
GOAL machine Anthony Clark fired Phoenix back to the top of the Division One table in spectacular style at the weekend when he scored a staggering eight goals against Archway Allstars.
The star striker more than doubled his goal tally for the season as Phoenix recorded their biggest ever win in the Camden Sunday League with a 15-1 victory at Hackney Marshes.
Clark, who lives in Kentish Town, said after the game: “Almost everything I hit went in, but before I got off the mark I hit the post – which was frustrating because I should have scored.
“That played on my mind more than the eight goals because in another game I might only get one chance so it’s important that I take them when they come along.
“But I’ll definitely take scoring eight out of nine chances,” he added.
Amazingly it’s not the first time that the 24-year-old has gone goal crazy in a game, or even the most he has scored in one match.
“When I was about 13 I was playing for Oxford Boys in the Hayes League and we won a game 24-0. I scored 15 goals so I still have some way to go to beat my record.”
Clark has now found the back of the net 14 times in just five games this season, while Phoenix have scored a whopping 34 goals so far.
On another day, Clark’s strike partner Michael Patrick would have stolen the headlines after scoring his second hat-trick of the season.
Jake King, Jamie King, Paul Butler and James Cole were also all on target to complete the historic victory and send Phoenix level on points with Reddot, although unsurprisingly top on goal-difference.
It proved a day for big wins at the Marshes with CS Maritimo beating Cobden Athletic 9-5 in another Division One thriller.
AFC Shooters topped the weekend goal-scoring charts in Division Two with a 6-1 win over Dinamo Dorigo.
Meanwhile in Division Three, Crouch End Rangers won 13-0 against Enate United and FC Bertoli beat Surreal Madrid 10-2.
Park City Rovers also did well to record their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory over River Fleet.
Powerhouse centre-back Nick Rockhold rose to head Rovers into the lead, but River Fleet hit back to level the scores.
Inspired by man-of-the-match Steve Quigley, Rovers scored at the death when Ashan Ramakrishnan rounded the keeper and coolly slotted the ball into an empty net. |
