Sorry for inconvenience of pool’s closure
• IN response to the news story and editorial (October 22) about Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre I would like to clarify some issues.
While the teaching pool is a source of frustration, it was closed for safety reasons demonstrating how we are committed to providing a safe environment for swimmers.
We are working hard to repair it and apologise to users for any inconvenience.
We are intent on identifying the root cause of the problem and putting it right once and for all.
Apart from that the centre runs smoothly, and is very popular.
However, it does endure a degree of wear and tear, which you would expect from one of the busiest facilities of its kind anywhere, attracting as it does nearly a million visits a year – and growing.
It is worth highlighting that Time Out magazine said the Centre was the very best place for a work-out in London 2008.
We are very proud of the fact that in Camden – unlike other London boroughs – participation in sport and physical activity is on the increase and that is in no small part due to the popularity of the centre and the opportunities for people of all backgrounds to take part, keep fit and healthy and have fun.
Schools, youth groups, voluntary sports clubs and the public use the centre on a regular basis demonstrating how valuable a resource it is.
We are constantly working to improve leisure services and to build on the success and popularity of the centre.
To that end we are looking to reopen it as soon as the safety issue is resolved.

Executive Member for Culture
