No room for complacency over resistance to antibiotics
• IN the last two years we have seen hospitals getting over-excited when they find the incidence of MRSA infection has reduced.
This looks like good news but the authorities do not tell the public about other bacterial infections that have increased. I think we must stop kidding ourselves and accept this problem. Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections are on the increase and a short-term drop is not anything to be complacent about.
With the swine flu virus being given most of the media attention at the moment, bacteria have been out of the spotlight. Antibiotic resistance is an international pandemic that compromises the treatment of all infectious diseases.
The American Academy of Micro-biology published a report saying this is “A War We Will Not Win”.
