Phyllis Dunne
Grandmother who was community’s heart and soul

A POPULAR grandmother and “pillar of the community” who tirelessly championed the rights of retired shop workers in Camden Town has died, aged 74.
Phyllis Dunne, described as the “heart and soul” of the community in Castle Place, where she lived for 41 years, died on October 6 following a fall.
Phyllis worked for most of her life in Camden’s shops, first at ABC bakery in Camden Road, and then for many years at Marks and Spencer in Camden High Street.
A dedicated employee, she went on to become treasurer of the M&S Retired Staff Association for Camden Town. She was an active member of Castlehaven Community Association.
Her son Steven said: “She was a great friend to many people and her house was always orbited by her neighbours and family. Two of her sons never left and settled just metres away from her front door. She was as fit as a fiddle and even at 74 went to the gym regularly.
“She was inspirational really, keeping up with the latest music trends.”
The daughter of a horse breeder in Dublin, Phyllis moved to Camden in 1956 with her husband Pughes, a carpenter.
She is survived by two sisters and a brother, her four children – Steven, 49, Sandra, 47, Tony, 41, and Phillip, 37 – and 14 grandchildren and step-grandchildren. The funeral will take place at Our Lady of Hal Church in Arlington Road at noon tomorrow (Friday).
