Charity’s cut of profits!

Free hairdressing day is a hit

A BARBER raised £1,400 yesterday (Wednesday) to help fund research into an incurable brain disease which claimed the life of his 10-year-old son.
Haim Cohen, who has run Life Barbers in Drury Lane, Covent Garden, for 20 years cut hair for free, donating the money he would have earned to children with cancer.
It was the second charity day Mr Cohen has organised since he lost his son Davide to a brain tumour condition known as Pontine Glioma, which affects around 40 children in Britain each year.
“I’m glad that people support us in fighting this terrible illness and I hope that other businesses will copy the idea. The hospital receives only £600 a year,” said Mr Cohen, who has counted Robert de Niro and Brian Conley among his past customers.
“My clients were very generous. I charge £15 for a haircut, but one customer donated £100, another one gave us £50. There were also a lot of ladies that didn’t want a haircut, but put money into the box anyway.”
Davide died in September last year, seven months after he had been diagnosed with the disease in Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Mr Cohen said: “I thought we would find a cure, but I was told there was not enough money to pay for research.
“When I went to see my son in hospital, I also saw other kids with tumours and similar illnesses. They are special. Very bright and brave.”
The next “Get your hair cut for Charity” day is on December 2. For more information go to Life Barbers at 177 Drury Lane or visit www.lifebarbers.com
