Remember, remember the next fifth of November?
• THE start of November has become a time dominated by anti-social behaviour with fireworks throughout many parts of Camden.
In King’s Cross and south of the Euston Road many residents have complained that kids openly aim fireworks at their homes.
Increasingly police spend their time trying to prevent any incidents with fireworks. Their work is really welcome and thankfully I am not aware of any major incident this year.
It does seem a shame that Camden’s ruling Liberal Democrat/ Tory coalition has no strategy for making Bonfire Night enjoyable for all residents. Too many underage people get hold of fireworks, but should be prevented by proactive work from council trading standards officers.
There seems to be no public awareness campaign on the safe use of fireworks, yet most bus stops in the borough have advertising space taken by Camden.
Camden has a range of open spaces, yet the council and the police do not sit down together and plan an organised firework display for all residents to enjoy safely.
People I’ve spoken to say that they had to take their children to Alexandra Palace to the free events organised by Haringey Council, and even as far as Clapham Common for the event organised by Lambeth.
I know that most parents I have spoken to have said they wouldn’t mind a small charge to help pay for security if it was needed.
Who knows, perhaps an organised event would prevent some kids from playing with fireworks in public as well?
We only celebrate Guy Fawkes night once a year so have ample time to plan to make it a safe and enjoyable evening for all residents.
It seems a real shame that once again the Lib Dems do not have a thought through strategy to deal with antisocial behaviour.
