Don’t sell homes with people in them
• CAMDEN Council’s current policy of selling off people’s homes is a disgrace.
I recently met two residents of a safe and peaceful home for elderly and vulnerable people in Gospel Oak.
Residents moved in with a promise that this would be their “home for life”.
For 20 years this has been their home, they’ve always paid their rent and looked after the property.
Now, it would seem vulnerable people don’t matter to this council as the residents were recently served with a “notice to quit” telling them their home was to be sold.
Since then, the stress has taken its toll and one resident has been taken seriously ill.
This is the true cost of Camden’s policy of selling properties to raise money.
Despite being told they must leave, the residents continued to pay rent even when Camden denied them cleaning services and the heating broke down.
They had to fight the council to get their heating switched back on and for old people with winter approaching this can only be described as cruel.
The fact that there are still residents in this property is preventing Camden from completing another sell-off.
Residents don’t want anything more than that the council stick to their promise that this would be their “home for life”.
This is more than just a story of vulnerable residents in Gospel Oak.
It is a warning to anyone renting from this council that they could be in jeopardy.
The council should not be selling homes while people are still in them. Camden should be helping vulnerable people.
