Lion play was no dud
• “GOOD theatres sometimes stage duds”.
Thus your theatre critic Josh Loeb described the two plays currently showing at the Lion and the Unicorn (Review, November 12). A review such as this will undoubtedly pass the death sentence on the shows.
Strangely having seen one of the productions, Christie in Love, I am inclined to suspect I went to a different play!
What the reviewer failed to mention was that this was the first London revival of a 1969 Royal Court production by award-winning British playwright Howard Brenton.
So in itself it is something of a period piece, interesting as a piece of post-war British theatre history.
The playwright intended to shake audiences into a reappraisal of society’s understanding of how a serial killer such as Christie comes into being. The play also revisits the issue of capital punishment, as well as the role and nature of prostitution.
I will also add that this hour-long play is well staged, well acted and imaginatively directed, so would recommend audiences go along and judge for themselves.
