Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 November 2009

Threat to ‘community learning’

• DO the residents of Camden know that a variety of courses are available to them?
I ask because many of these courses are about to close owing to “lack of interest”. They range from language learning to art and cookery and come under the heading “community learning”. After a prolonged period of contact with the marketing department of one college, during which time I tried to impress upon them that they were not making information about courses available, they finally said to me that sadly residents obviously were not interested and many courses would be closing. These courses are of particular interest to the over-60s as they are held during the day and at very reasonable rates. It seems Camden are happy to distribute expensive brochures to the libraries a couple of weeks before the courses start but not to let people know through advertisements that residents can pick up a brochure in libraries.
Residents who have been attending the classes only know about them through word of mouth. We find it hard to believe that there is a lack of interest in learning in Camden!
