Ardiles salutes Redknapp ethos

Tottenham legend Ossie tips Spurs squad for a Champions League place

IF Spurs can keep their main ball players fit from January onwards, fans will be enjoying Champions League football next term, according to club legend Ossie Ardiles.
The Argentinian, who joined Spurs in 1978 with fellow countryman Ricky Villa and went on to win two FA Cups with the side, was speaking exclusively to the New Journal this week at the launch of a new restaurant in Camden Town.
He revealed that he loved watching skilful stars like Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon, who reminded him of his own playing days at the Lane.
The ex-midfielder, who had two spells at Tottenham as a player and then returned to manage the side, said: “Luka Modric is a big player for us. I really enjoy watching him and his injury this autumn has been hard, as he was showing his class in August.”
Modric broke his leg in the home win against Birmingham on August 28 and is still some weeks away from being fully fit. Spurs have also lost winger Lennon for four games and have yet to play first choice centre backs Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate together.
Mr Ardiles added: “I watch Spurs, I love going to the Lane. The team are doing so well this season despite missing some big, big players. But if in the new year they can keep themselves free of injury I think we will get a Champions League spot. We certainly have the squad.”
Ossie, who won the World Cup in 1978, managed Spurs between 1992 and 1994 and was full of praise for Harry Redknapp’s footballing ethos. He said: “You can see that Harry commands respect and has a clear idea about playing the Tottenham way.”
