Brazilian Denilson’s big dipper impresses Gunners’ boss ahead of Chelsea clash
ARSENE Wenger is preparing to unleash his secret weapon against Chelsea on Sunday – Denilson’s stubby ankles.
The Brazilian scored a dipping 20-yard screamer on his return to the first team in the Champions League on Tuesday. It was a goal only Denilson could have scored, according to Wenger.
He said: “It was a typical Brazilian shot and typical Brazilian technique. It is a different flight of the ball. I tried to analyse how that can happen and I can only think it is because he has shorter ankles and can kick the ball a bit higher as a result.”
Is Wenger, dubbed The Professor for his clever demeanour and obsession with statistics, going all geneticist?
After the last Champions League tie, he talked at length about how Cameroonians are known as the “Germans of Africa” on account of their unusually “strong bodies”.
The Gunners will be in need of some extra mettle on Sunday against Chelsea.
Kieran Gibbs was injured during Tuesday night’s 2-0 win over Standard Liege, which guaranteed the Gunners safe passage into the knockout stages of the Champions League for the tenth year in a row.
Wenger said: “He has a big hole in his leg. It was a very bad challenge. He is very, very doubtful for Sunday.”
That leaves Armand Traore or Mikael Silvestre fighting for a place at left back, while Denilson is likely to partner Cesc Fabregas in midfield with Alex Song.
Arsenal are eight points adrift of the league leaders with a game in hand. |
