Phoenix on brink of title
DIVISION One leaders Phoenix edged a step closer to winning the title on Sunday with a hard-fought victory over Sir Robert Peel at Hackney Marshes.
Midfielder Paul ‘Gazza’ Butler made the breakthrough midway through the second half with a stunning 25-yard free-kick.
Phoenix doubled their advantage with the goal of the game. Kevin Duffy broke down the right, before playing in Anthony Clark. Leading scorer Clark beat two players and picked out Alex Vascon, who capped a man-of-the-match display with a clinical finish.
Peel pulled a goal back but Phoenix held on to seal a 2-1 win and with it three precious points.
Phoenix are now 12 points clear at the top of the table after title rivals Reddot lost 4-3 against Cobden Athletic.
In Division Two, Lord Tredegar upset the form guide once again with a commanding victory over league leaders Mostyn FC.
James Kelly bagged a brace as Tredegar moved to within three points of Mostyn at the top of the table. Paul Colechin and Daniel Foward were also on target, before an unfortunate own-goal completed a 5-0 rout. |
