A ‘Billiard Table’ mystery
• RESIDENTS in Camden Square, Camden Mews and Camden Road have been bemused about council plans to flatten a patch of land known locally as the “Billiard Table” and turn it into a cycling route with direct access to the very busy Camden Road.
At a packed meeting in September the unanimous view, including the view of local cyclists, was that this a bad idea.
But Camden seem undeterred.
Another consultation meeting is taking place this week where specially commissioned urban designers will present us with another set of plans.
One aspect of the Billiard Table mystery has, however, become clearer.
A Freedom of Information request I made says this project is the brainchild of the Camden Cycling Champion, our very own Councillor Paul Braithwaite.
Now we have all had a special letter from his colleague, Councillor Ben Rawlings, saying Paul’s idea isn’t perhaps so great, but they will go ahead with plans after the election!
Unfortunately the council has declined to say how much it has cost to commission the urban designers or the costs of pulling down the trees and implementing their scheme.
In the meantime I hope other residents will join me and others for a tree and bulb planting “dig-in” at the Billiard Table on Saturday December 5 at 11.45am.
A “blooming” Billiard Table will give us all pleasure and help to defeat anti-social behaviour.
