Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 December 2009

Save Athlone House for the Heath’s sake

• I WOULD like to encourage readers to register their strong objection to the planning application to demolish the Victorian mansion house known as Athlone House on Hampstead Heath and to replace it with the much larger new building.
It will destroy a magnificent historic and beautiful building and decimate the view we currently enjoy from Hampstead Heath.
I also feel very strongly that the original developers of the new flats in the grounds of the house should be held to their agreement not to allow occupancy of any of these new apartments until they have completed the restoration of Athlone House.
That they have sold on the property does not exonerate them from their obligation to restore and refurbish the building. I have urged Camden planning department to apply for a High Court injunction to stop anyone occupying the new flats until the conditions of the original planning approval are met in full.
It is obvious that the original developers are trying to wriggle out of their obligation to restore Athlone House.
It would be disgraceful if they are allowed to get away with it.
