Young Arsenal aces lose out in cup quarter-final as boss Wenger snubs Hughes

THE young guns of Arsenal crashed out of the Carling Cup last night (Wednesday) after suffering a 3-0 defeat away at Manchester City.
Arsene Wenger failed to hide his frustrations as he stormed down the tunnel without acknowledging City opposing manager Mark Hughes following the quarter-final loss.
Hughes criticised the Gunners’ boss afterwards saying: “He doesn’t know how to lose.”
But there was clearly no love lost between the managers as Wenger snapped back with: “I have nothing to say, I’m free to shake hands with who I want.”
On the field Alex Song and Armand Traore kept their place in the Arsenal side as Wenger made nine changes to the team that lost 3-0 against Chelsea on Sunday.
The Frenchman lived up to his promise of using the competition to blood young players, fielding the likes of Craig Eastmond, Fran Merida and Jack Wilshere.
The millionaires of Manchester, meanwhile, put out their strongest possible team – including former Gunners duo Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure.
It was another of City's big summer signings that broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half.
Carlos Tevez was allowed to drive into the penalty area before smashing the ball into the top corner.
Arsenal briefly battled to find a way back into the game, but the result was put beyond any doubt on 69 minutes when Shaun Wright-Phillips unleashed a thunderbolt from the edge of the area.
Substitute Vladimir Weiss came off the bench to add the finishing touches to an impressive 3-0 win. |
