Camden New Journal - Comment

Guinea pigs? – not us

• We already have an 11-metre T Mobile mast (very much against our wishes) directly opposite Toneborough in Abbey Road.
Now Orange have been given the go-ahead by Camden to erect an eight-metre mast a few yards from the other one on the pavement between Havenpool and the new Medical Centre which is being built.
We were not informed about this application and when we did find out only had two days in which to lodge our objections.
A petition was sent to the planning department just in time. We pointed out that these masts were an eyesore, spoilt the view, lowered the tone of Abbey Road and reduced the market value of the property. They say the mast will be obscured by trees. What trees? There is only one where they want to erect the mast.
We feel that the Telecommunications Act of 1984 should be scrapped and new legislation brought in enabling people to object on health grounds and restricting the erection of these masts near people’s homes, schools and medical centres.
There is no use telling us that there is no evidence that these masts are dangerous to our health. There is no evidence that they are not.
We know what radiation even in small doses can do. We are people not guinea pigs. Why don’t they erect their masts further up Abbey Road in Westminster? The pavements are just as wide. Maybe they should consider us expendable. So much for Blair’s democracy.
