Prefect patrols curb the lunchtime bullies
ARMED with only a prefect badge, students at a West Hampstead school are on a mission to protect younger pupils.
Teenagers at Hampstead School in Westbere Road are giving up their lunchtimes to look out for signs of bullying.
The hope is that the prefects – introduced by head of year 12 Judith Hoffman, will become role models for younger pupils.
Prefect Kathryn Chivers, 16, explained that the aim was to improve on the prefects’ role in public schools.
She said: “It’s about helping people.”
Monday, the first day of the scheme, went well, according to prefect Katie Lashley, 16, who revealed she had already broken up one fight.
She said: “It was handled well. We got crowds away and then we got the teacher.”
Ms Hoffman, who has been a teacher at the 1,300-pupil school for 20 years, hopes the innovation – part of the sixth-formers’ Community Challenge project – will become permanent.
She said: “I’m expecting a lot of the older students to gain confidence and for the school to be an even friendlier place for younger students.”
Miss Hoffman said she had been inspired by the playground monitors scheme at nearby Beckford Primary School in Dornfell Street.
The Hampstead students had opted to be known as prefects.
Student Jemimah Mensah-Coker, 17, said: “Prefect derives from the word ‘perfect’ so I’m guessing they’re model students.” |
