Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 9 March 2007

Fears over crossing are unwarranted

THE letter about road safety at a crossing in Hornsey Rise may have raised undue fears about whether the crossing was contributing to accidents (Action now might save lives, March 2).
I want to reassure Tribune readers and others that our road safety effort is focused where it’s needed and has contributed to a 50 per cent fall in casualties on Islington roads from 2000 to 2005.
The success has been as a direct result of a number of schemes across the borough, including reducing speeds through 20mph zones and deterring dangerous and obstructively parked cars using controlled parking zones.
Before this latest incident, the police confirm there have been just two recorded accidents at this location in the last three years. Neither was linked to the operation of the crossing. Across the borough, we’ll continue to make our streets safer.
CLLR LUCY WATT
Lib Dem executive member for environment
