Bottom place ‘but schools not the worst’
EDUCATION chiefs have hit back at newspaper reports claiming that Islington’s secondary schools are “the worst in London”.
Results from key stage 3 exams, taken by 14-year-olds, placed Islington schools below those in the other 31 London boroughs. But Councillor Ursula Woolley, Lib Dem executive member for education, said last night (Thursday): “For key stage 3 we are bottom but if you look at results across the board, including GCSEs, you will see we are not. “We are midway through the process of sorting out our schools, with extra effort being put into GCSEs results so far. “Headteachers have been carving out the next budget and there is more money for key stage 3.”
She added: “My disappointment with these reports is that it is doing down young people, when it is the people delivering education that should be held to account. Our schools are making good progress.”
