Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 March 2007

Our church is typical

THANK you for the excellent photo by Bruno Desmond of the international mix at St Mellitus Church in Tollington Park (The united nations of St Mellitus, March 9).
However, I wish to disown the quote your reporter attributed to me – that we must be one of the most cosmopolitan churches in the borough.
The real importance of that long list of nationalities represented in the parish is not that we are exceptional, but that we are typical of most Christian churches in London and of the mosques.
For readers who haven’t a clue who St Mellitus was, he was a Roman monk and missionary (another immigrant!) sent by Pope St Gregory the Great to support St Augustine of Canterbury. He became the first Bishop of London in the year 604, then third Archbishop of Canterbury, where he died in 624.
