Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 March 2007

We want to keep green space

WE know people are concerned about Transport for London’s (TfL’s) proposals for City Road and Goswell Road (Pedestrians face a dance of death, March 9).
While we support its aim to make it easier for cyclists, bus passengers and pedestrians to travel around the area, we object strongly to any suggestion of decreasing the green space at Duncan Terrace Gardens.
We are investing an extra £205,000 in Duncan Terrace because we want to make this a more attractive public space. None of our proposals involves losing any green space.
We are pressing TfL for more information and further justification that the traffic proposals are needed. There are a number of design issues that need to be resolved to ensure the scheme does not push problems into surrounding residential streets.
TfL’s scheme is an initial consultation on design principles. TfL will present the proposals at South and West Area committees on March 26.
CLLR LUCY WATT
Lib Dem executive member for environment

I AGREE with the proposal to restrict right turns at the Angel to buses only. However, the proposal for other traffic is wrong as what is needed is to sort traffic out before it reaches the Angel.
My solution would be to use Moreland Street and Spencer Street instead of Wakeley Street. Both these streets would become one-way, with traffic in City Road turning left into Moreland Street being sorted so that traffic heading for Pentonville Road would turn left into Goswell Road while that heading for Islington High Street would use Spencer Street and turn into St John Street and would therefore be able to go across the Angel without turning.
The contra-flow bus lane in City Road would be extended to start outside the former City Road station. In addition, clearer signs could be installed near Old Street roundabout to encourage use of Old Street instead of City Road, as the only alternative would be an Islington congestion charge with traffic turning into St John Street.
The long-term solution is to accept that City Road and Pentonville Road need to be widened and Goswell Road closed off at the Angel.
