Petition to save charity shop where Kate Winslet hunts bargains
CUSTOMERS have launched a petition to save a popular Salvation Army charity shop from closure.
The shop in Upper Street, Islington, whose customers have included actress Kate Winslet, is one of 200 properties owned by Islington Council which are to be sold off at auction.
Green councillor Katie Dawson, who is a customer, is backing the campaign to save the shop, which supports the borough’s poor and homeless.
“I support all local small shops,” Ms Dawson said. “They help our community to thrive. The Salvation Army shop is particularly popular because you can pick up good bargains.
“Charity shops are part of the green culture. They recycle clothes, rather than throw them away, and raise money for good causes. I buy a lot of secondhand clothes.
“If this closes we’ll probably get another estate agents.”
No date has been set for closure, which is expected in late summer.
Manager Sue Platt said: “Although part of Islington might be affluent, there are huge pockets of poor areas. People need charity shops. They come in off the streets and we give them sleeping bags and warm clothing in the winter.
“We’ve even exchanged wet clothes for dry ones without charge.
“We’ve had hundreds in to sign the petition. People don’t want to lose us.”
