Guide’s mission to help orphans
A GIRL Guide is to spend three weeks in South America helping abandoned children.
Jackie Johnson, 15, of Thornhill Bridge Wharf, King’s Cross, will travel to Peru in August with 15 other Guides to help build an extension to the Rainbow Centre, an orphanage set up in 2002.
Jackie, a member of 1st Clerkenwell Guides, said: “The greatest thing I hope to achieve is a real sense of having helped as some of the children there are in such awful circumstances. I also hope to gain an insight into Peruvian culture – and learn some Spanish.”
The guides will work with a charity, Kiya Survivors, set up in 1998 in the aftermath of the El Nino extreme weather phenomenon. The charity supports abused and abandoned children.
The Guides will teach painting, drawing and drama to the orphans.
Jackie needs to raise £2,300 before setting off, but is already on her way to the target.
n An Islington Community Chest grant has been awarded to 1st South Islington Brownies to buy sports equipment and art materials.
The group, which meets at St James’ Hall, in Packington Street, Angel, has expanded after a successful recruiting campaign.
It now offers a Rainbow Guide group, for girls aged five to seven, and a Guide group for girls aged 11 and over.
