Cinema memories
• WHEN I was a child Mecca bingo hall in Essex Road was called the Carlton Cinema (Save our bingo hall, March 16).
It was an impressive building and I used to look forward to Christmas as the Carlton Cinema gave us a free show and a bag with goodies.
I was one of a family of 10 children so that was special to us. I lived in Canonbury Road and can recall the trams running down that road to New North Road. I’m sure I used to see people going into the Carlton in evening dresses.
I drove past the site of the Old Vic cinema in New North Road last week and noticed it has now been demolished. That used to be the Twopenny Rush on a Saturday for the local children. I’m not surprised that at last it has gone to developers, for a block of flats, I expect.
