Murad Qureshi
‘Alter kick-off times to ease traffic chaos’

TRANSPORT bosses should have the power to change match kick-off times at the new Arsenal stadium, according to a new inquiry.
London Assembly member Murad Qureshi is investigating ways of giving Transport for London (TfL) the same powers as police, who can change start times on security or health and safety grounds.
The Labour member will consider the measures as part of a London-wide investigation into the travel plight of sports fans.
As an away fan watching Arsenal play Manchester United, Mr Qureshi has experienced first hand the travel problems facing visitors to the Emirates Stadium, in Ashburton Grove, Holloway.
He said: “The Emirates is the one that keeps coming up. Things could be made better by better transport, better co-ordination and Transport for London having the power to change the time of the games.”
He added: “It’s all very well talking about improving travel for Olympic spectators but what about people who go to local clubs and suffer badly going back home?”
By changing kick-off times, congestion could be relieved when fans arrive at games during the rush hour, Mr Qureshi said.
He also wants to examine Holloway Road Tube station, the closest to the stadium. It has not been refurbished, despite promises from TfL, Arsenal and the Town Hall.
Mr Qureshi will investigate why Drayton Park station remains shut on match days, and if it would be possible to open it, even for a small number of fans.
His report should be finished by the start of next football season.
