Under-fives need your help
• WE run a group for under-fives with Down’s Syndrome, called Downright Excellent. We are based in Islington but families come from Camden, Hackney, Haringey, Kent, Lewisham, Barnet and Westminster as well as Islington.
Our local councils refuse to fund the group as we welcome children from any borough of London. This is necessary in order to have enough kids in each age group as the Early Intervention Programme depends upon turn-taking and group work to be effective.
The children start sign language at six months and learn to read from the age of two in order to build up their language skills before they join mainstream schools at five years old. We are providing a valuable service to these children and society as a whole.
We are funded by some small grants and our own fundraising efforts. Money is tight and we are fighting to survive.
One of our dads, Stephen Hunt, has a place in the London Marathon. We are seeking to publicise our group in order to recruit new members, as many families out there may not know we exist yet, to ask the public to sponsor Stephen, who can be contacted by email at stephenjhunt@gmail.com, and to see if anyone out there has a marathon place but has not yet chosen their cause and would like to run it for Downright Excellent.
