Have a fling with gay Gordons
A HIGHLAND dance class is proving a hit with Islington’s gay community.
Every week, members of the Gay Gordons don kilts and sporrans and dance to tunes such as Jimmy’s Fancy, The Chase and the Dashing White Sergeant.
The class is aimed at gays and lesbians, but organiser James Pretlove, 37, says it is “straight friendly”, with everyone dancing with everyone else, regardless of sexual orientation.
He said: “Everyone who thinks they can’t dance – can. It’s more about having a good time and enjoying yourself, not just about getting the steps right.” It is also a “fantastic aerobics workout”, he added.
The weekly classes at Unity Church Hall, off Upper Street, attract between 30 and 40 dancers of all abilities, with about 20 per cent hailing from north of the border. Mr Pretlove, thanks to some Scottish ancestry, has a family tartan, although he “doesn’t like the colours”. Kilts are not essential and many dancers turn up in comfortable clothing.
Members of the class attended a gathering of the Royal Scottish Dance Society last week.
Classes are held every Thursday from 7pm to 9pm at the hall behind the Unity Church, 279 Upper Street. For more information, go to www.thegaygordons.org |
