Net closes on Tinker killers
MURDER investigators may be drawing closer to solving the mysterious stabbing of a labourer on a Mildmay Estate last year, an inquest heard yesterday (Thursday).
Police probing the circumstances into how Joseph Armstrong, 39, ended up dying on a Besant Court doorstep say the investigation is at a “sensitive stage”, St Pancras Coroner’s Court was told.
Four people remain on bail pending further police enquiries.
Mr Armstrong, known as Tinker, died at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel last September, after being stabbed in a stairwell and staggering 100 yards before collapsing outside a front door, whispering “help me, help me.”
A post mortem gave the cause of death as stab wounds to the abdomen and chest.
Last year The Tribune reported how gangs had been terrorising Besant Court, Newington Green Road, and nearby Hathersage Court in a turf war over drugs.
Anthony Pridige, 71, who called for an ambulance for Mr Armstrong said at the time: “The fella lay there with blood pouring from him but he didn’t say he had been stabbed or attacked, he was just flopping about on the floor. All he said was ‘help me’. It’s a real mystery as to what actually happened to him. It was almost as if he didn’t want anyone to know the reason behind the attack.”
Police cordoned off the estate for three days, while they combed the area for clues.
Mr Armstrong, who had no fixed address, was known to have lived with his girlfriend in Hathersage Court.
Residents and workers on the estate said Mr Armstrong’s death was the result of rising tensions. It followed a fight in Hathersage Court earlier in the day and youths gathering in Besant Court apparently looking for retribution.
It’s unknown whether or not Mr Armstrong was involved.
Verdict: Unlawful killing.
