Student with a cross to bear
STUDENT Tim Philips sweated and staggered through Islington under the weight of a 21-kilo giant wooden cross.
Bravely, the Royal College of Art student had offered to carry the cross, measuring seven feet by three feet, half a mile along Upper Street as part of the annual Good Friday religious ceremony.
However, judging by the tortured expression on the 26-year-old’s face, it appeared he was beginning to have second thoughts.
Tim, from Newington Green, makes wooden sculptures and was daubed in fake blood for the procession from the N1 Centre to St Mary’s Church in Upper Street which involved hundreds of worshippers.
He converted to Christianity in January following an Alpha course at St Mary’s.
“Both my parents are atheists,” said Tim. “They were a bit bemused by my recent religious conversion and my decision to carry the cross. But it was something I felt I had to do.
“When I first set off the cross felt extremely heavy but I soon got used to it. It was an interesting experience.”
After the procession, Robin Plummer, pastor of the New River Church in Islington, led a meditation.
