Town hall dance studio’s ‘bid to become nightclub’
A DANCE studio which opened at the Victorian Finsbury Town hall in January this year is being accused by residents of wanting to run a “night-club” at the establishment.
Local residents are furious that Urdang, whose aim is primarily to provide dance tuition for young people, is applying for a late-night 3am (midnight Sunday) drinking and entertainment licence at the Grade II-Listed hall.
Although the primary entrance to the studio is on main road Roseberry Avenue, the back entrance is opposite the Finsbury estate and Joseph Trotter Close where there are homes for hundreds of people.
Finsbury tenants and residents representative Sharon Hayward said: “Urdang acquired Finsbury Town Hall on the understanding that it would be making a contribution to the community.
“I would suggest that with a 3am licence the only contribution to the community would be a lot of noise and nuisance.”
Final objections to the licensing plan had to have been with Islington council by yesterday Thursday.
The application will come up at a future committee meeting.
Ms Hayward added: “This application talks of music and late-night refreshments. It sounds more like a nightclub than a dance studio.
“More than 40 residents have signed a letter of objection to the scheme. It only takes a hot night when they decide to keep their windows open at the back to have serious noise problems.”
Urdang were unavailable for comment.
