Wake-up call goes to early-rising builders
LABOUR councillors have scored a victory following complaints about building contractors working on the Highbury Stadium homes development.
Earlier this month, the councillors took to the streets with council officials and neighbourhood police to discuss concerns raised by residents about speeding lorries causing a hazard to pedestrians and heavy vehicles driving to the site before the starting time of 8am.
Traffic speed monitoring is now under way at four points on the lorry route to Highbury Stadium.
Following pressure from Labour councillors Theresa Debono and Richard Greening, the council, together with Arsenal and contractor McAlpine, has agreed to hold a meeting to discuss the problems with residents at 7pm on April 30 at the Aubert Court Community Centre.
Cllr Debono said: “I take these complaints about speeding by construction vehicles in narrow residential streets very seriously, as do the many residents who have contacted me. “Both Cllr Greening and I have worked closely with Street Management and succeeded in getting several measures in place to reduce the impact of traffic. “The contractors have to understand they must wait until 8am to start and that when they do they must drive safely and within prescribed routes. “We will be keeping a close eye on the situation ahead of our public meeting with the contractors.”
