Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 27 April 2007

Neighbours want good night’s sleep

• SOLANGE Goumain’s letter is of no reassurance to residents of the Finsbury estate or others who live in the vicinity (Nightclub fears are unfounded, April 20).

Ms Goumain has requested a 3am licence each night of the week, excluding Sundays when she proposes midnight, not 2am as she suggests in her letter.
Few will find believable the necessity to sell alcohol or to stay open until 3am each night for performances of youth events and folk dances. Is it any wonder we presume this to be a cover for a real intention of running a nightclub?
Ms Goumain states that those who have already booked the hall have an “expectation of a bar until 2am” and then accuses those of us who have genuine concerns about her proposed 3am licence of being the cause of cancellations.
When she has only just sought permission to be open until the early hours of each morning and hasn’t yet permission to do so, it is anyway pretty scandalous that such bookings were made and more so that she points the finger at anyone else but herself for cancellations.
One can only assume that, since the Lib Dems sold the Town Hall to Ms Goumain against the wishes of the majority of Finsbury residents, she assumes this application will simply go through on the nod. Our estate is within a few metres of Finsbury Town Hall. We are a community of about 1,000 people of different ages – elderly, working people and young children, all of whom have a desire for a good night’s sleep.
Whatever Ms Goumain claims, residents here have already noted an increase in noise levels, and because we have numerous other drink and entertainment venues in the area, we are only too aware not only of noise levels from surrounding venues but from those leaving them.
Having hundreds turning out onto the street near our homes, after they have been drinking until 3am, is not what we would deem to be in any way sensitive to our needs.
SHARRON KELLY
Chairwoman, Finsbury Estate Tenants and Residents Association
